Zacuto Films Continues Their Behind-the-Scenes Documentary Drama Series

CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 07/07/11 -- The Zacuto Films behind-the-scenes (BTS) crew reveals more trials and tribulations of shooting an independent documentary film. In Episode 2, "Chasing The Light," the series captures the journey of Director T.C. Johnstone and Producer Greg Kwedar as they finish the last 18-days of filming their upcoming documentary, "Rising From Ashes," a film about Rwandan's first national cycling team.

Episode 2 features the RFA crew in their battle to catch the elusive light. Lack of sleep, language barriers, and pressures of shooting in a foreign country begin to take its toll. "This has not been the easiest film," says a tearful Johnstone. "It's the hardest project I've ever worked on. There's a real story here and if we wait, it's going to pay off. At the end of the day, you look at these guys and you realize... this matters... this really matters."

A turning point of the show occurs on an exhaustive day of shooting as the crew travels along a dirt road to a mountaintop location. When the small window of "magic hour" begins to fade, the crew scatter in their own quest to capture the beauty of Rwanda. After Director Johnstone's failed attempt to reel in his team, he's forced to make a decision, "Do we leave a man behind?"

Next, the documentary filmmakers stress the importance of having a liaison while filming in a foreign country. "You need someone who not only speaks the language and translates, but someone who knows the people and culture," says Kwedar. "Someone who can get you places." The episode wraps up with a common struggle plaguing many filmmakers: choosing between two alternative locations. Do you pick the location with the best sound or the best light?

Closing out the episode, the filmmakers discuss their fears of getting the shot. "Planning for the race is the kind of thing that would keep me up at night," says Kwedar. "It's been that looming storm on our horizon since before we even got to Africa. What happens if we don't pull this off?" Watch this dramatic episode now and see what it really takes to film a feature length documentary.
